Factual Reply to a LED flex blog by Gavin Tiernan

While I'm happy for you to promote your product, you do seem a bit confused with how a real neon sign operates so allow me to correct some parts of your blog.
1:yes, a neon sign on a magnetic transformer requires around 20W per metre ( same as LED flouros) but if on an electronic transformer similar to that of an LED transformer then neon requires LESS power to run.. 9W per metre in fact.

2: neon signs do not run hot.. p-lease do some research before posting assumption as fact

3:Neon signs do not slowly dim over a period of time

4: A correctly made neon sign is 100% maintenance free

5: yes, neon signs require a higher voltage to operate but only require a tiny current 20-24/ 1000ths of an amp. Current kills, not voltage. You have more chance of being killed by an LED signs than you do a neon one

6: there is not an LED sign made yet that has outlived a neon sign. Oldest known continually running piece of neon is over 80 years old... you will never catch up or even expect to last anywhere near that.

7: Neon has been officially recognised as the most efficient form of lighting available by UL laboratories in USA due to its low maintenance, low running cost, light output and lastly its ability to be almost 100% recyclable.
.
8. LED signs do not run at 1/20th of the power a neon sign does. Please, voltage is NOT power. Volts multiplied by amps is power... this is how your electricity bill is calculated. Again though, you will find a neon sign requires LESS power than an LED equivalent
So please, if you are going to make comparisons it is important to be factual

FAKE NEWS

THE LATEST LED FLEX SCARE AGAINST REAL NEON

 THE GAS IS TOXIC
HUH! BULLSHIT!
THE FACT IS

NEON IS A ATMOSPHERIC GAS
YOU BREATHE IT INTO YOUR LUNGS
IF IT WAS TOXIC WE WOULDN'T BE ALIVE

There is no new NEON

The name of neon in the lighting field came from the inert/noble gas NEON discovered in 1898 by William Ramsey & Morris Travers. When Georges Claude exhibited the first advertising signs they used the gas Neon because of its bright Red/Orange glow although the art of using glass tubing began in the 1850's with the Geissler Tube invented by  Heinrich Geissler there was also the Crookes Tube invented by Williams Crookes. Then at
the 1893 Chicago world fair Nikola Tesla exhibited lamps he called discharge lamps which was glass
tubing bent into shapes & names of famous people then vacuumed & filled with a small amount of gas.
Nikola Tesla also brought AC power to the world at the same world fair

Now the LED industry which is controlled by large multi international companies have developed
a lighting product & have used our name of neon in their product title. In no other field is a product
allowed to use another products name. It is ambush marketing in the highest degree. They should been
made to title the product as LED silicone flex or generate a new generic name. Along with using
the name of neon. They have successfully coined neon lights as traditional neon, where in fact it is
Real Neon as there is really only one lighting source that uses neon as a light source. My hope that
one day a law firm will be a champion to the makers on real neon, against the multi international
companies to take it to the courts to stop the ambush for continuing, just as the province of
Champagne did to protect their product in the wine industry. It could also give the law firm great
media exposure.

Neon Signs Myths & Facts

In today’s world we all try to be as environmentally conscious  as we can. LED manufactor’s & distributors have gained through their propaganda, a unfair believe that they far outclass Cold Cathode (neon) tubing as the most efficient source for signage illumination. Some of the points made by the LED industry are.

Myth 1./ LED’s do not contain mercury. But neon does
Fact
Fair point Cold Cathode does have mercury, but Neon does not! neon is a pure inert gas which is used for the red spectrum of lighting.
Also mercury is used in many other forms of lights fluorescent tubes & compact fluorescent bulbs are mercury vapourised.

BUT WITH LED’s MATERIALS SUCH ARSENIC,ANTIMONY,CHROMIUM & LEAD AS WELL AS OTHER TOXIC CHEMIALS
SOMETIMES IN AMOUNTS EXCEEDING REGULATIONS ARE USED.

Myth 2./ Neon is filled with noxious gases
Fact
This is their most blatant lie. The gases used in neon signs historically are Argon(Ar) Neon(Ne) where the name light comes from. And more modernly Krypton(Ky) Helium(He) & Xenon(Xe)
These are all inert (noble) gases obtained from the atmosphere. Also the neon tubes only have a small level of gases in the them using aunit measurement of Torr neon has up to 20Torr. When 760Torr is the level of the atmosphere

Myth 3./ Neon operates on dangerous High Voltage
Fact
The high voltage used for Cold Cathode (Neon) is not the same type used in transmission & other power source it uses magnetic shunt technology to limit the current to produce 30milliamps which when translated to amps it is only 0.03 of an Amp. Both the power supply units for Neon & LED are powered by the same primary volts which is converted. Neon is also able to be run on 12vdc transformers & has even been powered by solar energy. The skipping girl in Melbourne Australia is one such example

Myth 4./ Cold Cathode (Neon) is not energy efficient
Fact
A 10Kv 30ma NTS transformer draws 1.2 amps 288 watts to operate but if Power Factor Corrected it draws 0.8 amps 192 watts
for 40ft/18mts of linear lumen output. When using a 10Kv Electronic Neon Transformer it draws 0.4amps 144watts to power
35ft/15mtrs of linear lumen output. \

Myth 5./ Neon has a shorter life span.
Fact
Most indoor neon pieces are virtually maintenance free. The transformer or power supply can last up to fifteen years, if it is correctly matched to the neon display. The neon tubes do not burn out like incandescent or fluorescent bulbs, and will last twenty years or longer if they don't get broken. How long does a neon sign last?

Myth 6./ LED’s are more efficient than Cold Cathode (Neon) when it comes to watts per linear foot.
Fact
Here is the real issue the LED industry always uses the worst case scenario for wattage consumption it uses the power usage of  NEON” not “Mercury Vapourised” tubes to compare as well as transformers not PFC (power factor correction). Also Cold Cathode
& Neon still give far more lumens per foot than LED’s, which means you compare light output to light output, Cold Cathode exceeds  that of LED’s for energy efficiency.

Myth 7./ LED’s are brighter than Cold Cathode (Neon).
Fact
LED’s do look bright than Neon but that is due to LED’s being smaller the same applies to the different size diameters of tubing
with neon 8/9mm tube is much brighter to the eye than the larger diameter tubes 15/18mm. the truth is the larger the tube the more light output is acheived know as lumems per foot.

Myth 8./ Mercury from old neon signs going into landfill to contaminate the environment.
Fact
Many recycling companies have made huge advances in being able to recycle mercury vapourised tubes.
Under environmental regulations in the State of California, most LEDs would be classified as hazardous waste

Neon Positives

Neon Positives

In 2010 the UL Authority rated neon as the greenest
lighting source in the world

Neon life expectancy is 100,000 hours but is known to work for over 30 years.

Neon is powered by a very low current measured in
1000's of an amp making it energy efficient

Neon is powered by a very low current measured in
1000's of an amp making it one of the safest forms of power

Neon is made of natural products Glass & Atmospheric gases we breathe in these gases

Neon is 100 % recyclable. & repairable

Neon has a 360 degree light output

Neon is a continuous stream of light

Neon is made in layers giving a natural writing effect

Neon is hand crafted by Artisans

Neon power supplies come with safety switches (OCM) which switch the power off if the neon is broken

Neon power supplies come with a power point ready to plug into a socket.

Neon is cool to the touch, No it won’t break if you do

Neon can be assembled on a background or in a case, so you can hang & turn on your neon

Neon can be made 3D. it does not need a backing
to keep its form

Neon is the real thing,

We could put in the cons of our imitators but with the positives of neon there is no need

The Passion For Real Neon

Neon is the natural form of light, the gases that are used come from the atmosphere. That when charged by electricity become to life by the ionisation of the gas atoms, creating a plasma which is contained in a glass tube. A neon light is in the same field as other plasma lights. Nature it self shows of the beauty of plasma with Lightning, the Northern Lights & Aurora Australis.
